What were you doing before this course?

I was fully employed working as a Business Development Manager, a manufacturer of corporate and commercial signage.

How did you find doing the course or training? Did it meet your expectations?

I really enjoyed the course and it met my expectations. The mix of topics made it feel really comprehensive, but the two parts that stood out most to me were systems thinking and project management.

The systems thinking section helped shift how I view sustainability challenges. Instead of tackling issues in isolation, I learned to see the bigger picture—how different elements are connected, what the root causes might be, and how to plan for long-term impact. Tools like systems mapping and doughnut economics were completely new to me and super eye-opening.

Project management was another highlight. It wasn’t just about the technical side of managing tasks—it really emphasised responsible project management, which felt much more relevant for sustainability work. Learning to factor in social and environmental impacts, stakeholder engagement, and ethical decision-making gave me a more well-rounded approach to leading projects.

The course also made space for personal growth, with modules on reflective practice, communication, and even climate anxiety—which was refreshing and grounding. On top of that, the added IEMA and CIWM memberships are a great opportunity to stay connected and keep learning.

Did the Skills Bootcamp improve your confidence when applying for green jobs?

Yes, definitely. The Bootcamp not only improved my confidence in applying for green jobs but also opened up the possibility of aiming for more senior roles. The combination of practical skills, like systems thinking, sustainability communication, and responsible project management and gave me a stronger foundation to take on greater responsibilities.

It also helped me recognise my potential as a sustainability leader, which has already made a difference in my current role. I now feel more confident stepping into leadership conversations and have even started exploring how I can lead sustainability initiatives within my company. The course helped me see myself not just as a job candidate, but as someone who can drive meaningful change in an organisation.

Did the knowledge gained during Skills Bootcamp help during the interview process?

While it doesn’t directly apply in my case, since I transitioned into a sustainability role within my current company rather than going through a traditional interview process, the Bootcamp still played a big part. It helped me build a compelling case for why I was a good fit for the role. The knowledge and skills I gained gave me the confidence to demonstrate how I could contribute strategically and take ownership of sustainability projects. It was a key factor in showing that I was ready to step into this new position.

What are you doing now and how has the course supported that?

I’m currently working as a Sustainability Manager, closely supporting the Head of Department on a range of sustainability projects. Since stepping into the role, we’ve already seen some great progress, including improvements in our sustainability credentials and reporting systems. The course played a big part in preparing me for this. It gave me the tools and confidence to take on the role with a clear understanding of sustainability principles, leadership, and systems thinking. It’s helped me align my work with my career goals and made me feel more capable of driving meaningful change. Since completing the course, I’ve joined networks within IEMA, which has opened up valuable opportunities for continued learning and professional connection. I’ve also completed an IEMA-approved GRI reporting course, which has further strengthened my skills in sustainability reporting and supports my ongoing career development. This experience has truly been a turning point in both my growth and confidence in the sustainability space.

Have you been given the opportunity to use knowledge from the Skills Bootcamp in your new role?

Yes, absolutely. The knowledge I gained from the Bootcamp has been directly useful in my new role as Sustainability Manager. One clear example is during our ISO 14001 audit with a UKAS-accredited provider—the understanding of environmental management systems and responsible project management from the course helped me prepare effectively and contribute confidently throughout the process. I’ve also applied what I learned when working on our CDP submission and EcoVadis sustainability assessments. The Bootcamp’s focus on systems thinking, leadership, and sustainability reporting gave me a strong foundation to engage with these frameworks and improve the quality and impact of our sustainability performance.

Did you move to a new sector upon completion of Bootcamp?

Yes, I moved into the sustainability sector after completing the Bootcamp. The course gave me the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills I needed to make the transition smoothly and step into a dedicated sustainability role within my organisation.

Would you recommend other people doing the course?

Absolutely. I would definitely recommend the course to anyone interested in sustainability or looking to move into a green career. It’s well-structured, practical, and empowering, whether you’re just starting out or looking to grow in your current role. The combination of recognised certifications, hands-on tools, and supportive learning made a real difference for me.

What would your advice be to others seeking a green job?

My biggest advice is don't wait until you feel fully ready. The sustainability sector needs people with a variety of skills, experiences, and perspectives, so start where you are. Take courses like this Bootcamp to build your knowledge and confidence, network as much as possible through platforms like IEMA, and focus on transferable skills like communication, leadership, and systems thinking. Also, be clear on your values, as employers really value passion and purpose.
